Travel Guide

Ethiopia is one of the most fascinating African countries for wildlife and birding, with new and exciting discoveries being made every year, and is surely also one of the most enjoyable, what with its wonderful light, diverse habitats, amazing scenery and very rich and often colorful avifauna. A must-visit for any wildlife enthusiast. 

Ethiopia has unique flora and fauna and extraordinary scenery to offer.

The primary aim of this special tour is to find the country’s endemic and not endemics Birds, wildlife resource, and scenery.

The trip starts with a trip to Debre Libanos, Which is a brilliant place to find beautiful Spot-breasted Lapwing, the taxonomically strange Blue-winged Goose, and other endemics.

Then our next destination will be Awash National Park, one of Ethiopia’s premier national parks, which has a rich diversity of birds as well as mammals.

Then, we will continue to the Highlight of our trip, Bale Mountains National Park. Here we spend the next two days searching for endemic mammals and birding varied habitats. Interesting mammals here are mountain Nyala, Klipspringer, Menelik’s Bushbuck, Bohor Reedbuck, and others.

Yabello wildlife sanctuary will be the next and important destination of the itinerary, which is a protected area and wildlife sanctuary in southern Ethiopia. This mosaic arid land is home to several wildlife and spectacular birds.

Finally, the tour ends with a drive back to Addis Ababa with the birding rift valley lakes of Ethiopia including Hawassa, Langano and Abijatta Lakes.

Time difference

During the summer months there is a time difference with respect to Spain of 1 hour less.

 

Weather

The wet season runs from March to September and the rains should arrive from June to October, with greater intensity from August to September, although droughts are extreme in the country. The temperatures of the different places that we will visit vary from a minimum of 13ºC to a maximum of 31ºC. For example, in the region of Debrelibanos there are minimum temperatures of 13ºC and maximum temperatures of 25ºC. The warmest place we will visit is Doho Lodge and Awash where average temperatures vary from a minimum of 20ºC to a maximum of 31ºC.

 

Recommendations

It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes such as trekking shoes and some light warm clothing in case it is a little cold in the mornings. As it is the wet season, it is essential to bring a raincoat.

It is essential to bring insect repellent as mosquitoes can be very annoying.

 

Currency

The currency is the Bir, which in the month in which the brochure was made the exchange rate was 58.98 Bir/euro. The change to the local currency can be made at the Addis Ababa international airport upon arrival.

 

Required documentation

Visa:

It is necessary to be in possession of a tourist visa. The visa must be obtained prior to arrival through the official website of the Immigration Department of the Government of Ethiopia (https://www.evisa.gov.et).

Passport:

To enter in the country it is necessary to have a passport with an expiration of more than 6 months from the end of the trip.

 

Difficulty

Low. Trips to the different observation places are made in vehicle and the walks we will do have no difficulty.
